Match Preview: Welling United (A)
It was back to winning ways for City on the weekend. A fine strike by Kieran Petrie secured a much-needed Saints victory against Burgess Hill Town on the road. For today’s hosts, however, it was another away defeat, as the Wings suffered their third successive league loss, this time against Folkestone Invicta.

🔴 THE HOSTS
Founded in 1963, Welling United began as an U15 Sunday youth team and rose to the heights of the Football Conference in their early years, an impressive rise through the football pyramid. For their first 15 years, they played on a sports ground near Butterfly Lane before moving to their current home, Park View Road.
Shortly after their formation, the club moved into senior football where they enjoyed early success. Welling secured three promotions in the space of just five years, initially winning the Spartan League, followed by the Athenian League 3 years later. They then secured promotion to the Southern League to round off a marvellous period of success. Continuing their strong spell of progress, six years on Welling earned promotion to the Conference division.
They’ve also had memorable moments in the FA Cup, notably reaching the second round to face Huddersfield Town in the 2005/2006 season. More recently, Welling regained their place in the Conference Premier in the 20011/12 season after 12 consecutive wins closed the gap on runaway leaders Salisbury, who once had a 10-point lead! The Wings were relegated along with us in the 2024/25 season, and currently sit in 21st place in the league.
📊 THREE FACTS
- Saved by their fans: In 2010 the club was facing financial difficulties and were given 14 weeks to pay their outstanding debt. The fans of the Welling United came together to raise almost all of the £60,000 needed to clear the club’s debt and save them from going bust!
- A rare Netflix TV appearance: In the popular TV series ‘Sunderland Til I Die’, the Wings got their moment of global screen time as they faced Sunderland in a pre-season friendly!
- Record attendance: The Wings hold an impressive record attendance of 4,100, set on 22nd November 1989 when the Wings hosted Gillingham in the First Round of the FA Cup. They secured a historic 1-0 victory before being knocked out in a Second Round replay by Reading.
🔎 ONES TO WATCH
- John Ufuah – The 26-year-old joined the club in the summer from Chatham Town off the back of an impressive season in which he totalled a combined 27 goals and assists after joining the Chats in October 2024. The winger has struggled to find the net this season, with just three goals so far. However, the Wings on the whole have found goals hard to come by. In terms of form, Ufuah’s attacking output has dipped, and having last scored on the 14th October, he will be eager to get back on the scoresheet tomorrow.
- Bradley Sach – Bradley Sach has been the shining light for Welling United in what has been a bleak season for the Wings so far. The 25-year-old striker signed in December 2025 from Hashtag United after catching the eye in a prolific 35 goal two-year stay at Canvey Island. So far this season he has been by far their most prolific scorer, with 9 goals in 27 appearances, 5 more than second top goalscorer Ruben Shakpoke. A physical target man who brings others into play, he is a proven goalscorer and is certain to keep the City back line busy with his work rate and physicality.
