Worthing 1 Saints 3

The Saints got the job done at the second attempt on Tuesday evening after goals from David Noble, Joe Iaciofano and Solomon Nwabuokei secured our passage through to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup.

City took the lead mid-waythrough the half when Noble’s free-kick from range curled over the wall and was fumbled over the line by Rees in the home net.

Another mistake from a Worthing man allowed the Saints to double their lead in the 39th minute. Darren Foxley’s cross from the right fell to Jones at the near post, however the defender could not clear the ball at the first attempt and Iaciofano pounced, slotting the ball home from a tight angle.

Things got even better just two minutes later. City won the ball high up the field and after a string of passes Zane Banton found Nwabuokei, who calmly finished with an outside of the boot finish from just inside the box.

Ian Allinson’s side continued to control large periods of play after the break, although they did suffer a couple of scary moments. Worthing’s Ayoola beat Snedker to a long ball and spun on the far sidebefore seeing his spectacular effort crash off the back post, and that was followed a couple of minutes later by Tennent’s header being cleared off the line by Iaciofano.

The home side’s attacking intent finally told in the 93rd minute, but it proved to be just a consolation. A free-kick from the right wasn’t fully dealt with by the Saints and the ball eventually dropped for Jones, who sent a rasping volley into the bottom corner of the net.

The Saints will now travel to Weymouth in the 3rd Qualifying Round on Saturday 5th October 2019. Kick off 3.00pm.
