Report from manager of the St Albans City FC Under 14s EJA squad, Jason Eames-Illingworth:
After a great first season in the Under 14s EJA league, the squad and travelling army journeyed to Holland for an end of season tour.
From our base we moved on the Friday to play TSV Meerbusch in Germany in what can only be described as phenomenal facilities. Our opponents regularly play against academy sides of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Schalke 04 and Dusseldorf, so we knew that we would be in for a stern test, especially as it was 80 degrees!!
The game itself was an exhibition of beautiful pass and move football from both teams, played in a wonderful spirit. The first half was evenly matched, however it was TSV who went ahead through a superb finish from their centre forward. Not to be outdone, city swept from one end to the other in a fine passing move which resulted in lobbed finish from Max Machen. Half time 1-1. In the second half it was a pretty affair with both teams having chances to win the game, ultimately the heat started to take its effect and the game ended in a 1-1 result.
TSV Meerbusch 1 – 1 St Albans City FC
On the Saturday, the squad ventured to VVSEC near Eindhoven and played in an 8 team 11 a side tournament, again in intense heat. Buoyed on by our supporters, playing on wonderful pitches we played with a level of intensity that proved decisive throughout the tournament. At times the possession based football played by the squad was outstanding and our opponents could not compete with it, as a result we marched relentlessly to a tournament win which was well deserved.
A superb first tour for the squad and supporters, an amazing experience of football, fun, laughter and development… now the boys can have a well deserved rest.
