Trophy journey begins for City

The Saints take a break from league action this weekend as they get their 2019/20 FA Trophy campaign underway with a trip to Welling United.

City slumped to bottom of the Vanarama National League South last Saturday following a 2-1 defeat against Tonbridge Angels. Zane Blanton’s late strike was the only highlight on a miserable afternoon.

Ian Allinson has promised changes as he looks to turn City’s fortunes around and that started on Tuesday night with the departure of assistant manager Glen Alzapiedi. David Noble and Dave Diedhiou have taken on some of Glen’s duties while the search continues for a replacement.

The City boss has also spoken of shaking up the squad and it is likely that we will see a number of arrivals and departures over the coming week.

Saturday’s meeting is the second time that the Saints have faced Welling at Park View Road in a month, having faced the Wings towards the end of October.

That game proved to be a good one for Ian Allinson and his men, as they came away with all three points thanks to Albert Adu’s brilliantly worked winning goal mid-way through the first half. The Saints will travel to South London knowing that a similar performance could secure their place in the next round of the Trophy.

Welling United, meanwhile, go into this Trophy clash on the back of an emphatic 6-2 victory over Braintree Town at Park View Road. Mark Goldberg’s side found themselves four goals up inside the opening forty minutes, before a red card each for both teams and four further goals rounded off a wild afternoon.

The Wings boss made a statement signing late on Thursday with the arrival of experienced forward Moses Emmanuel. The 30 year old netted 25 goals in all competitions for Billericay last term before he left Essex earlier this week.

Kick-off at Park View Road is 3pm.

Admission prices are £13 for adults, £9 for concessions, £5 for 12-17 year olds and under 12’s are free with an adult.
