Saints U18s 4 Cheshunt U18s 2

The under 18s were back in EJA league action, against Cheshunt FC, at the weekend. The first league game of 2020.

Both sides started well and moved the ball quickly. Cheshunt nearly took the lead with a long range effort that was superbly tipped over the bar by Jackson.

The Saints then went close with a through ball from Geller finding Lawrence who, with his back to the goal, turned and hit a left foot shot that was tipped round the post by the Chesunt ‘keeper.

Cheshunt then had a good spell – pushing the Saints back. However, from a Cheshunt corner, the Saints won the ball and broke on the counter. Owen, in the right channel, drove into the box and unselfishly pulled the ball back for Lawrence to slot home low to the keeper’s right.

The pattern didnt change with Cheshunt keeping the ball well and the Saints needing to defend resolutely. Following a good move through midfield, the Saints won a free kick for handball 20 yards out to the left of the area. Orde stepped up and curled a superb free kick into the top corner.

HT Saints 2 – 0 Cheshunt

Coming down the hill in the second half, the Saints started on the front foot and, following a high press, forced the Cheshunt centre half into a short back pass. Lawrence closed the keeper down, with the block falling to Hodgson who slotted home into the empty net to put the Saints 3-0 ahead.

Cheshunt began to dominate possesion and deservedly pulled a goal back with a slick one touch move into the box and finish.

Cheshunt then won a free kick in a similar position to the Saints free kick in the first half. The well struck free kick looked to be heading over the wall into the top corner – but Galatis (brought on at half time, back from injury) somehow got across the goal and tipped the ball onto the post.

The Saints fourth goal came from another swift counter attack. A through ball from Banerjee deflected off a defender and fell to Owen who beat the centre half and slotted home.

With 10 minutes to go, Chesunt got their second goal. A good move down the left ended with a striker, on the edge of the box, curling his shot into the corner of the net.

Full time: Saints take the points with a 4-2 win (9 wins from 9 in the league)
