City secured their place in the semi-finals of the Herts Senior Cup with a 2-0 victory over Southern League side Royston Town at Clarence Park.
While the opening forty-five minutes saw chances few and far between, the Saints did come closest when Harry Forster burst through the middle of the visiting defence and struck a curled right footed effort from the edge of the box that Smart palm away.
Goalkeeper Alex Tokarczyk, making his first start for the Saints, was called upon to make a stop at his near post just before the interval.
The deadlock was broken seven minutes after half-time when two loanees, in the form of Forster and Antonis Vasiliou, combined before the latter switched the ball onto his right inside the area and found the far corner of the net with his effort.
The lead was doubled with City’s next attack as Vasiliou turned provider for Merson, who met the wide-man’s cross on the edge of the box and struck a sweet volley that looped over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.
Rohdell Gordon was denied from extending City’s lead late on by a sharp Smart stop after the substitute had twisted past a Royston defender.
The Saints are back in action on home soil again on Saturday when they take on Oxford City in the Vanarama National League South. Kick-off is 3pm.
