The Saints got their pre-season underway with the visit of League One side Peterborough United. The Saints started the game with most of the team that ended the 2016/2017 season – with only Dean Snedker replacing James Russell in goal. Peterborough’s starting XI included ex-Saint Junior Morias and they started the game well putting the Saints defence under pressure and forcing a couple of good saves from Snedker. However, the Saints grew into the game and the midfield energy that was witnessed at the end of last season was increasingly evident and Lucien and Zane Banton and their lead but in the 43rd minute Junior Morias broke clear and smashed the ball past Snedker into the roof of the Saints goal.
The second half saw both sides change nearly every player on the pitch. The Saints only retaining Snedker and Bender and giving debuts to many new signings and three trialists. Peterborough introduced players such as new signings Ricky Miller and Danny Lloyd as well as a familiar face in Lewis Freestone who had a short period on loan at the Saints during the 2016/2017 campaign. Peterborough’s full timers quickly gained the ascendancy and in the 48th minute Danny Lloyd fired a free kick into the bottom corner of the Saints net. Their lead was further extended in the 56th minute when a Ricky Miller free kick was missed by two Peterborough players but found its way into the far corner of the Saints goal. Within 60 seconds of that goal, Miller collected a pass from Danny Lloyd and expertly lobbed Snedker to score his second goal of the afternoon. Peterborough threatened to overcome the Saints defence but a combination of some fantastic stops by Snedker and blocks by Harold Joseph kept them at bay. The experimental Saints line-up grew into the game and threatened on occasion but were unable to break down a well organised Peterborough defence.
