Hitchin Town U18s 2 Saints U18s 4

The Under 18s were away to Hitchin in the league playing on the 3G surface at The Arena Stadium in Baldock.

Hitchin set up to frustrate the Saints from the outset, putting 11 men behind the ball. This afforded the Saints with lots of possession but asked questions on how to break the Hitchin side down. The Under 18s took 25 minutes to make the break through – a slick move from the back saw a cross into the box which Lankshear met and, although his header hit the bar, Banerjee was on hand to tap home.

The Saints were further rewarded for their efforts shortly after when another attack down the right found Wilkins who hit a fizzing cross that found Lawrence who flicked the ball in to the net off a Hitchin defender from 6 yards.

Hitchin had to change there tactics and pulled a goal back from their first dangerous attack. A striker wriggled free and fired a left foot shot into the net.

The Saints made it 3-1 just before half time. Geller broke down the right and his cross came back off the woodwork, with Lankshear on hand to slot home.

Half time: 1-3

As expected Hitchin came out in the second half looking to be more adventurous with their football. However, the Saints continued to control the game. Hitchin did pull a goal back when Banerjee, looking like he’d been fouled in his own box, lost the ball and the Hitchin forward finished well, leaving Saints’ keeper Galatis with no chance.

The Saints weren’t finished though and were rewarded by another fine move when Geller found Ralfe to make it 4-2.

With two minutes to go, the Saints nearly added a fifth goal. Some nice interplay down the left found Hinkson who put in a great cross to the back post for Lawrence to head just wide

Full time: 2-4

Man of the Match: Alex Lankshear.
