Academy launches for the new season

We are delighted to announce that St Albans City FC is to launch its Academy for the 2020/21 season. On Tuesday last week, the First Team squad, management, and staff spent some time with some of the inaugural members of the Academy.

Dean Austin has been appointed as the Academy Technical Advisor. Dean will be known to many at Clarence Park, having started his career at The Saints in 1988 before his talent was spotted, and he moved to Southend United going on to make 400 appearances across his career for Southend, Spurs, and Crystal Palace. Dean has a wealth of experience in the game – having managed and coached at the highest level as well as establishing Academies at a number of EFL clubs. In Dean’s role, he will look to create an elite learning environment for young players to flourish as footballers and as people and to try and guide them to aspire to play for St Albans City FC’s First Team and beyond.

Dean Austin said: “Our aim is to coach and guide our players in the St Albans City FC philosophy and methodology. With our vision to nurture, guide, and develop young footballers on how to live their lives on a daily basis and for them to aspire to play for St Albans City FC’s 1st team and beyond. My ambition is inside 5 years to have 50% of St Albans City FC’s 1st Team coming from the Academy and education scheme.”

A Technical Board has been established, consisting of First Team Manager Ian Allinson, First Team Asst Manager Chris Winton, First Team Coach Steve Conroy, and Dean Austin. The Board will regularly review the progress and development of each student in the Academy.

Lawrence Levy, Chairman, and Co-owner of St Albans City FC commented:

“This is another exciting step forward for The Saints. We’re creating new opportunities for young players in the St Albans district to progress into senior football. This Academy has been an ambition of our Club for many years and I’m delighted that, with Dean Austin’s excellent work, we are ready to launch this season.”

St Albans City FC Academy will commence this 2020/2021 season working with two teams; one at U16 and one at U18 age groups, who will play out of The EJA League. Our aim is to create a top learning environment for them to flourish as footballers and as people and we hope we can guide and inspire them to play for St Albans City FC’s First Team and beyond.

We will simultaneously launch our Professional Development Centre. Our PDC will allow boys aged 13-14 the opportunity to access additional high-quality coaching and support, relevant to their development stage, whilst still playing for their respective clubs.

We will also be opening up trials for our 2021/2022 Academy students aged from 13 through to 19 and next season we expect to complete the Academy with the establishment of additional teams at U14 and U15 age groups.
